Knights win four straight, lead Region X
After winning four games in a five-day span, Surry Community College’s volleyball team now stands atop the Region X standings.
The Lady Knights are now 7-1 overall and 3-0 in Region X action after defeating Bryant & Stratton College at home on September 7 and then winning three road games in three days Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Surry started the week Sept. 7 at home with a 25-21, 18-25, 25-16, 25-15 win over Bryant & Stratton.
Katie Moncus led SCC with 26 assists to go along with six digs, spreading the ball around to several hitters as Anika Thomas and Lauren Charleville both had nine kills. Kenly Burchette added seven kills, Lexia Wingler had five kills and Mikayla Thorpe chipped in two kills. Thomas led SCC with 24 digs, Bryce Smith added 14 digs and Mandy Hamrick had seven. Burchette digged five balls, Wingler had three digs, and Lexie Hartle, Charleville and Kallie Blackburn each had one dig.
“Our hitters are doing a really good job and everybody is able to contribute and be involved in offense,” Surry coach Jan Marion-Kiser said. “Pretty much everybody that is playing right now is contributing on defense and picking up balls so we can run an offense. It was not a bad game, l just felt like we were a little out of sync that night and didn’t play to our potential.”
The Knights started their road trip Thursday with a 25-14, 21-25, 25-12, 24-26, 15-12 Region X win at Guilford Tech. Moncus had a huge night setting with 42 assists, 18 digs and one kill. Thomas also played huge, leading the team with 16 kills, 30 digs and four aces. Wingler chipped in 10 kills, two digs and two solo blocks.
“Anika had an outstanding night and Lexia played a good game at the net,” Marion-Kiser said. “We are still working on getting our blocking down, but it was a much better game on the block.”
Charleville contributed nine kills, three solo blocks, an assisted block and five digs and Hartle added eight kills, six digs, a solo block and two assisted blocks. Burchette threw down seven kills to go along with eight digs and a pair of aces and Blackburn recorded three kills. Bryce Smith had a big game defensively with 28 digs and an ace, while Hamrick had four digs and four aces.
After a tough game at Guilford Tech, the Knights swept Davidson Community College on the road the next night, winning 25-22, 25-17, 25-16. Moncus dished out 26 assists to go along with an ace and eight digs. Charleville led Surry with 10 kills and she had a solo block and a dig. Thomas nearly had a double-double with 10 digs and eight kills. Wingler and Burchette added six kills each, and Hartle threw down five more. Smith added 12 digs in the win and Hamrick had a pair of serving aces.
“It was a pretty solid win on the road,” Marion-Kiser said. “After not having a really good game on Tuesday and going five sets with Guilford, they figured out they wanted to get in and get that win in three.”
SCC completed the big week Saturday with another Region X road victory, winning 25-16, 26-24, 25-22 at Lenoir Community College in Kinston.
“Having a young team and driving four hours to play was a little rough,” Marion-Kiser said. “We were a little tired and the girls did all they could to come out and win in three. I still think we could have played at a little higher level.”
Moncus again got the Knights going with 34 assists, eight digs, two kills and an ace. Wingler led the team in kills with 13 to go with a pair of digs and an assisted block. Burchette had a strong outing with 10 kills, nine digs, an ace, an assist and an assisted block. Thomas chipped in 17 digs and six kills and Charleville added six kills, three solo blocks and an assisted block. Smith led SCC with 19 digs, Hamrick had 10 digs and Blackburn recorded one dig.
“It was a really good week for us. We are 7-1 on the season and that is big for us right now. In Region X we have the best overall record,” Marion-Kiser said. “We have a huge game Thursday against Catawba Valley and I am anxiously awaiting to see how we perform against them. We have to go there and play so we will have to have our A game when we get there.”
