Surry improves to 2-0 with win over Montreat

DOBSON – With Katie Moncus controlling the offense, Surry Community College’s volleyball team improved to 2-0 Monday with a four-set win over Montreat College in Dobson.

Moncus led all players with 39 assists as the Lady Knights came away victorious 25-20, 23-25, 27-25, 25-19. She was at the center of a balanced offensive effort, spreading the ball around to all of the team’s hitters.  Moncus also added 16 digs and two kills.

“Katie is doing a good job distributing the ball and I feel like if she is getting over 30 assists, especially in just three or four sets, that is good,” Surry coach Jan Marion-Kiser said. “She really did her job as far as holding down that right back and distributing the ball to hitters and getting them where they need to be on floor. She is doing a phenomenal job of getting it in hitters’ hands and spreading it out.”

Anika Thomas led Surry at the net with 15 kills to go along with 10 digs. She is excelling in her role as an outside hitter after having to play out of position at libero a year ago.

“We took her out of that libero jersey and put her outside and it is serving us well. She is super strong and she is out of the block quick,” Marion-Kiser said. “She is doing a great job hitting the spot and defensively she had 10 digs, which is not bad, either.”

Lauren Charleville also had a big game for the Knights, finishing with 12 kills, five digs, an ace and three solo blocks. She stayed in motion the whole game and kept Montreat busy at the net, Marion-Kiser said. Surry’s other middle hitter, Lexia Wingler, contributed 10 kills, two solo blocks and three assists on the block with one dig.

“They showed again how strong our middles are - both were in double digits in kills,” Marion-Kiser said.

Kenly Burchette also had a versatile outing with 12 digs, eight kills, an ace and two assists on the block. She also did not have any hitting errors .

“She did a great job of taking care of the ball and not making errors at the net and scoring points for us,” Marion-Kiser said.

Kallie Blackburn and Mikayla Thorpe each had two kills in the win. Both are getting adjusted to the speed of the college game, but Marion-Kiser said it was great for them to get in and get experience under their belts against bigger teams.

Mandy Hamrick contributed seven digs for Surry and kept Montreat off-balance with her serving. Bryce Smith led the Lady Knights with 26 digs.

“Overall her performance was great,” Marion-Kiser said. “She did a good job getting the ball to our setters and getting the ball up on defense. We have girls out there really hustling.”

Surry will be back in action Saturday with contests against Greensboro College and Ferrum College at Greensboro.
