Surry volleyball camp set for July 16-19
Surry Community College will be hosting its annual summer volleyball camp July 16-19 in the campus gym.
For four days, girls will be given instruction on the fundamentals of volleyball. The camp is directed by head coach Jan Marion-Kiser along with the Surry Knights’ volleyball team.
The cost of the camp is $50 and will include a camp t-shirt. Each camper is asked to bring a refillable water bottle and a snack each day. Campers will be learning proper technique in the areas of hitting, passing, setting, serving and blocking.
“This is a great opportunity for those who want to learn the game to come and be exposed to a great game and learn the fundamentals; along with those who already play the game to brush up on their skill set,” Marion-Kiser said. “We have a great group of young women who are excited to teach the game to our campers this summer.”
Two returning All-Region X players will be counselors at camp this summer in East Surry’s Bryce Smith and North Stokes’ Lauren Charleville. Charleville will serve as a camp counselor along with fellow North Stokes alum Tana Frye. Lauren is returning for her sophomore season at Surry Community this year after being named the team’s best offensive player in 2017.
“Lauren was Second-Team All-Region last season and proved to be a threat offensively and defensively for the Knights,” Marion-Kiser said. “Lauren is a smart hitter and works hard to put the ball away on offense and equally hard on defense to shut the net down with a block. We are excited to have her back and are looking forward to her having a great season. Joining the team this season will be Tana Frye. She will be a great asset for us to add to our roster. Tana will give us another great defensive player on the back row as she brings a lot of energy and is explosive on the floor in getting to balls on defense.”
Smith also returns for her sophomore season at SCC after earning All-Region X honors and being named Surry’s best offensive player in 2017.
Also returning for their sophomore season at Surry will be middle hitter Lexia Wingler (Forbush High) and Mikayla Thorpe (Forestview High).
“All of these young ladies will be returning and will be providing the Knights with strength in hitting and blocking along with great passing,” Marion-Kiser said.
Joining the team this summer as freshmen are middle hitter Callie Trivette and right-side hitter/defensive specialist Chloe Ford (both from Starmount High), middle hitter Kaylee Freed (North Surry alum/Pfeiffer University transfer), outside hitter Adison Needham, (Reagan High alum/Montreat College transfer), setter Raygan Casstevens (North Wilkes High), defensive specialist Brittany Eller (West Wilkes High) and Mount Airy High School alum Sadie Brooks.
The Knights will open the season on August 25 at home against NCAA DIII Greensboro College and Davidson County Community College at 10 a.m. in the gym on campus.
“We are asking that all campers come out to watch the game that day wearing their camp shirts and be recognized at the match for attending our camp,” Marion-Kiser said.
