Surry’s Gunnell, Dorsett tie for seventh in Pinehurst
Surry Community College golfers Nick Gunnell and Chris Dorsett tied for seventh Sunday in a two-day tune-up for the upcoming Region X Fall Championship.
Gunnell, a sophomore from Starmount High School, and Dorsett, a freshman from Mount Airy, both shot two-day scores of 158 in a tournament at the Country Club of Whispering Pines in Pinehurst. Dorsett shot a score of 79 both days on the 7,100-yard course, while Gunnell started slow with an 83 on Saturday before rebounding with a 75 Sunday.
“Nick started with a terrible day, but he pulled it back on Sunday to 75. He kind of redeemed himself but the damage was already done on day one,” Surry golf coach Tom Pendergraft said. “Chris is a freshman and not as experienced as Nick. I think nerves were a part of it. If Nick had maintained a score of 75 he would have won the thing. Even if he had broken down a 77 both days he would have been right there in third place. I guess it wasn’t meant to be, but coming out in seventh for both of them, I’m proud of them.”
Pendergraft noted scores were high across the board at the big 7,100-yard course with several long par-5s and a good mixture of sand traps, bunkers and water hazards. But considering the way Gunnell and Dorsett played, the Surry coach feels good about how things are setting up for this weekend’s Region X Fall Golf Championship in Duncan, S.C.
“I was pleased with the performance of the guys. If you look at the scores, our guys are right there with everyone,” he said. “I took the best two out of seven this weekend and left three at home that could compete with the two I carried, so I am feeling good about this coming weekend. It may not pan out but it looks like we have a good chance of competing with Spartanburg Methodist, a Division I (JUCO) school and our rival, Patrick Henry. I am hoping this experience, and getting to see the other teams, was a plus knowing where I can position our guys and hopefully put them in a winning position.”
Joining Gunnell and Dorsett at the Region X Fall Golf Championship this weekend will be sophomore Jack Edwards and freshmen Dylan Ray and Brock Jessup.
