Surry’s Huntley named national player of the week
After leading his team to five wins in the past seven games, Surry Community College’s Jordan Huntley has earned national player of the week honors by the NJCAA.
Huntley, a sophomore centerfielder from Butler High School in Charlotte, led the Knights to a weekend sweep of Montgomery College (Md.), a team ranked eighth in the nation in the preseason. Huntley batted .500 in the doubleheader, going 3-for-6 with two home runs, a triple, six runs batted in and two stolen bases. Huntley’s two-run homer in the first game of the doubleheader brought Surry to within 7-6 in the fifth inning. He led off the sixth inning with a walk and scored the tying run as SCC went on to rally for a 15-11 victory.
In the second game of the twin bill, Huntley hit another homer to lead Surry to a 7-2 win. He was honored for his efforts Wednesday as he was named National Player of the Week by the National Junior College Athletic Association.
“Jordan deserves it. We’ve won five of our last seven and he has been leading us,” Surry head coach Tim Collins said. “He’s extremely talented, one of the most talented players I have ever coached.”
Huntley has put up big numbers at the plate all season. Surry started the season slow with a 1-8 mark, but now stands at 6-10 after its recent hot streak. Huntley has been a big part of the turnaround as he is hitting .363 for the season, a team high. He also leads the Knights with 11 extra base hits, five stolen bases and an on-base percentage of .500. His 13 RBIs are the second-highest total on the team.
“He is definitely a five-tool player, which makes him special. He doesn’t have a weakness in any part of the game,” Collins said. “He’s getting a lot of interest from four-year schools. He has not made a decision yet, but there is a lot of interest. He’s very talented, a really good young man and an exceptional worker. He busts his butt and works hard and we are lucky to have him.”
Surry is scheduled to be back in action with home doubleheaders Saturday and Sunday against McHenry County College. Games start at 1 p.m. Saturday and noon on Sunday.
