White, Knights sweep Myrtle Beach golf events

Dobson, NC – March 11, 2015.

Chandler White and Surry Community College’s men’s golf team made a statement during the opening weekend of the season, sweeping a pair of matches in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

White, a sophomore from West Forsyth, shot a 76 on Saturday and a 71 on Sunday to finish as medalist and lead the Knights to victory both days in a four-team match with host Apprentice School, Central Carolina Community College and Louisburg College.

On Saturday, White carded a 76 and teammate McKinley Johnson, a sophomore from East Wilkes, shot a 77 to lead Surry to the win at Arrowhead Country Club. Freshman Jesse Robertson (West Stokes) finished with an 88 and Josiah Blevins (freshman, Elkin) finished with an 89 as the Knights finished with a team score of 330, which was 38 shots ahead of runner-up Apprentice School.  SCC won despite battling nasty golf conditions of rain and 42-degree temperatures.

“It was just not a good golf course to score well in, but we did well enough to win,” Surry coach Tom Pendergraft said.

The Knights improved on Sunday, teeing off a team score of 309 to again top runner-up Apprentice by 18 strokes at The Wizard Golf Club. White was the top individual performer again, finishing with an even-par score of 71. Johnson again turned in the second-best round with a 76, while Blevins shot 79 and Robertson finished with an 83.

“We kind of dominated both days. I was pleased with the win on day one, but not the score. Day two, they came out with a 309 and I would have liked to see maybe a 298 or 300, but it didn’t happen,” Pendergraft said. “But these courses were brand new to the kids. They have never played them before, so I was pleased with the scores. I thought they did well considering we really haven’t been able to practice because of the weather.”

In particular, Pendergraft was particularly impressed with White and Johnson.

“I was pleased our number one and number two were one and two overall both days. Overall it was good,” he said. “Both those guys tried out for the U.S. Open. Chandler missed the cut by four strokes I think and McKinley missed it by like seven strokes. Those two kids are crackerjacks. They are good players.”
